A minimum breadth of about one third of the length of the dog's neck (measured from the base of the ears to the front edge of the shoulder blade) is recommended. The collar should be fitted and worn around the lower or middle third of the dog's neck. When adjusting the width, 1 to 2 fingers should fit under the collar without any pressure being exerted.

The collar may never be so tight that the dog's neck circumference is restricted. Choke collars may only be used with strain relief/stop and corresponding adjustment (so that the dog's breathing is not restricted through the tightening).

Adequate training (with positive motivation, preferably starting at puppy age) is to ensure that puppies learn to walk on the leash. If a dog often pulls on the leash, a well-fitting harness is to be preferred.
